ULA Athletics & Clubs: Hear us ROAR!

Updated: Aug 2

The transformative learning experiences at UpROAR Leadership Academy (ULA) help our scholars grow both in and out of the classroom. Established in 2017, UpROAR Leadership Academy’s passionate and skilled team members enable our scholars to make an impact on the world.

An important part of every educational experience for 5th-12th graders -- is extracurriculars. UpROAR is proud to offer a wide range of scholarly leadership opportunities via athletics and clubs. ULA is part of the Greater Charlotte School Athletics Conference (GCSA) and our beloved Ms. Heikkila is Secretary/Treasurer of the conference as well. Here are the schools we compete with in the GCSA:

  • Bonnie A. Cone

  • Concord Lake STEAM Academy

  • KIPP

  • Mallard Creek STEAM Academy

  • Queen City STEM

  • Southwest Charlotte STEM Academy

  • Steele Creek Academy

  • Uproar Leadership Academy

  • United Community Charter

Transformative Leadership

Our commitment to transformative leadership and learning experiences enables our scholars for ‘real life’ and productive futures. To be the leader of tomorrow, we must prepare our scholars with life skills now. And what better way to round out our robust academics and structured school model than through a well-rounded, scholar-focused middle and high school experience?

Athletics such as basketball, football and cheerleading allow our Tigers and Tigerettes to shine via teamwork, agility, endurance and cooperation. Clubs like Yearbook, Student Council, Math Club, JROTC and ROTC elevate our scholars to identify their values and beliefs for themselves, embrace common goals and explore effective communication strategies.

Structured and Joyful School Culture

Our ULA school creed and our shared culture of honor marches to the beat of a persevering drum, “In the face of adversity, we never give up.” We see our scholars both on and off the court pushing through, moving forward, and growing through new experiences.

And just like our scholars experience in clubs and sports, we at UpROAR Leadership Academy keep the communication lines open. Our family atmosphere means we connect with our parents, caregivers and guardians regularly so we are all on the same page -- supporting every individual, unique scholar at our small, caring, and free public charter school for grades 5-12.

Project-based Learning

And don’t forget our commitment to project-based learning. Our scholars thrive by getting real. We offer electives that showcase the world around us -- from Architecture and Construction to Culinary Arts and Healthcare.

Our scholars use TikTok in our Filmography unit during Art class, connect to the natural world by growing and caring for plants, and engage with vital social emotional learning. Well-rounded scholars are our top priority alongside leadership, commitment to self and others and a sense of honor and integrity. We achieve this each day -- top down -- from every faculty and staff member -- to our newest incoming scholars -- because we care so deeply about every scholar now and in the future.
